[ever since Sora arrived in Goldenrod via Bullet Train, he's been... attempting to calm down an absolutely horrified, newly hatched Yamask, and coax him out of the corner of whatever room they happen to be in. then, idly, he'd scanned his 'gear for the pokédex entry.]

[unfortunately, what he learned left Sora about as horrified as his new pokémon was-- and scrambling to rethink his strategy of how to approach the Yamask.]

[this evening, he switches on the feed quietly, his expression stony-faced. this has not been a good month for neither him or the pokémon he runs across, apparently. Sora's sitting in the lobby of the Goldenrod hotel, and the Yamask in question is somewhere off in the background, his mask placed carefully on the floor beside him, as he... frantically scribbles in a notebook. as best as a gangly limbed pokémon can, anyway.]

[impressive legibility for a newborn aside, whatever it is the Yamask is writing about has Sora extremely worried. his question, and the way his voice is lowered, is a bit worriesome, too:]

Um... Is there anyone out there who... [how to put this. blurt it out, Sora!]

I want to help out a friend I just met, but I found out that he's... dead. Kind of. Does anybody have experience with ghosts?
keychained: (pic#2490737)
[even though Sora always has, and always will believe his mantra that there is no such thing as never seeing a friend again-- enough so that it's a sentiment he's willing to share with the rest of the network-- some days and some unexpected goodbyes are just plain harder than others.]

[it's part of the reason why it's well into the afternoon and he's still in his pajamas, and on and off beneath the covers and staring off some distance, lost in thought. Sora had managed to keep to himself for most of last week, and has made a point not to not bring up any behavior he might have witnessed with Riku, but... now that it's all worn off, he just feels miserable. too many people to miss. thinking about how Kairi isn't here is an intrusive thought he can't seem to really shake, either.]

[still, unkempt as Sora is today, he still manages to arrive at one conclusion that... takes the edge off, at least: it's all right to be sad. it's all right to hurt, especially when you lose someone that means the worlds to you, even if it's been a while... but now's a good reminder as any that there are still people here that he loves, and needs to stay with. meeting the rest again will happen when the time is right. right?]

[to that end, everyone Sora has ever spoken with, even if it was just once or twice, and... well, even if they didn't speak on very pleasant terms, might find a text message popping onto their 'gears:]

Are you still here?

Hi.

[the feed cuts in abruptly, showing an egg settled carefully in what looks like a pile of scarf and blanket. there's nothing really spectacular about this particular image-- it's just a pale yellow egg with a few brown spots.]

[well, the Mudkip approximately the size of a teacup perched atop it is a little weird, but it's not the first Pokémon Sora's ever had to attempt to incubate an egg. you just... keep on keeping, Behemoth.]

[when Sora bends down to get a better look, and his face lowers into view, however, he looks several thousand layers of pleased as he pokes a finger out to nudge at Behemoth and the egg gently.]

Y'know what this is? I mean, besides an egg. [Behemoth flails a stubby limb at Sora with a high-pitched chirp, before toppling comically right off the egg.]

To me, it looks like hope-- faith in this place. I mean, if Puddles managed to get lost for a few months, and then finally found his way back to everyone he really cares about, I don't see why the rest of us can't. Even if we're all from different worlds, or even if someone goes back to their world, you know?

Just something to think about, I guess.

[the feed cuts off abruptly there, but about an hour later, a text is sent out to the entire network. no better way to start than to find the pokémon he was separated from when he first went home. and Kairi... well, he'll see her again one way or another, whether it's here or at home. that's a thought that'll keep him smiling for as long as he's here.]

[a certain kid on the network this evening has, having stayed mostly quiet except to catch up with friends after that train disaster, finally decided to pipe up-- to ask something those who know him probably... would not expect for him to ask.]

[there is a good reason for it, though.]

I know that the point of traveling around this world is to work with and learn about Pokémon, but... does anybody else besides me miss going to school?

[because studying somehow seems like a plausible method to recapturing and hanging on to whatever vagrant memories he might not know about, of course. that supposed brain fart about Hollow Bastion a week ago was enough to really rattle his confidence.]

[Saffron Pokécenter visitors might spot this studious teen situated in a quiet corner, a large notebook open across his lap. whether he's scrawling out notes or a hilariously bad drawing, it's hard to tell at a passing glance.]

[good evening, Johto! on your 'gears tonight is a kid with a thousand problems-- and his pokémon are at the moment every single one.]

-- Hey, guys? Quick question.

[Sora points the feed toward a cozy spot of trees near the exit to Violet City, and the entrance to Route 31. a giant boulder-sized Skarmory is contentedly perched amongst the trees, though when her gaze catches the 'gear, she gives it-- Sora, presumably-- a rather dirty look.]

I found Metal Chocobo! [judging by her hardened stare, she wasn't too thrilled with him up and disappearing on her, either. instead of pecking at him disapprovingly like one might expect, however, she's elected to just sit there. glaring.]

But... what do you do when one of your pokémon steals your other pokémon and refuses to give them back?

[upon closer inspection... yes, that would be a yellow paw on the ground directly beneath where Metal Chocobo is roosting. Roxas the Jolteon knows better than to attack without Sora's permission, so he is just... silently enduring being sat on like an egg.]

[heck, there's even an egg there, too. Sora didn't get a chance to read who it was from before Metal Chocobo swooped in with an metallic grinding squawk and snatched it right out of his hands, though.]

[memories are a strange thing.]

[on some days, one could stand up from their seat, head out the door with a determined fire in their eyes, and... completely forget what they got up for in the first place. sometimes retracing one's steps doesn't even help. other days, one could have a song from their childhood stuck in their head without any particular reason. it's as if one's brain simply decided to turn on a recording.]

[other days still, you could be minding your own business, when suddenly, bam! something triggers an onslaught of memories you didn't know you had, if they're even yours to begin with. apparently, this phenomenon hurts one's noggin quite a bit.]

[in any case, this may explain why a confused but energetic kid steps out of Mom's house in New Bark Town, 'gear and gear in hand, and... promptly faceplants. for those of you watching the feed, it cuts in when the pokégear hits the ground. this unfortunate memory victim is down for the count for a few minutes-- at least, until that familiar pop of a pokéball can be heard offscreen, and a Girafarig appears on screen to start chewing on his trainer's mess of brown spiky hair.]

[considering where Sora is from, and where he is-- and the Girafarig, too-- this is entirely normal. when the feed finally times out, Sora's awake and coherent enough to try to bat Puddles away. worst alarm clock ever, honestly.]
keychained: (whirlwind)
What's the best way to hang on to something really important to you? Do you keep it close to you, or do you lock it up somewhere safe?

[... not that Sora is entirely aware of a way to lock memories up somewhere safe, but if it comes to the point that he can't keep them in his heart where they belong, like he's concluded after a hazy dream last week and the way Naminé acted around him earlier, he's starting to think he's well on his way to figuring something out.]

[whether you contact him through the gear or seek him out somewhere in Olivine, you're likely to find him in one of two places: he might be in his room he's sharing with Kairi and Riku at the inn, where there are pieces of paper strewn everywhere. all over the bed, on the nightstands, the desk in the corner... Sora's right in the middle of the mess, trying to figure out the best way to sort everything.]

[or you may find him flat on his back along the shoreline, staring up at the sky-- just like how one might find him if he were back home. if there's one thing that doesn't ever change, no matter how the rest of the world changes, it's the sounds of the ocean.]

[Sora doesn't remember much about the last time Johto's population grew exponentially in size, aside from the fact that he was in his favorite pair of pajamas and he lost a fight miserably to Vanitas-- though, the fact that he's suddenly able to summon his Keyblade is at least helping to deter the thought of losing fights-- and it isn't exactly the main thing that has him on edge.]

[it's this flower thingy that keeps popping up wherever he goes. tapping it with the Keyblade did nothing. taking off toward the beach to try to lose it did nothing; it just reappeared right behind him, even as Sora waded out into the water. ... fire especially did nothing. flower thingy does not like fire, and it's starting to get really creepy.]

[hence why he turns on his pokégear, fixing it on his, erm... stalker.]

Okay, I get that a lot of new people have been showing up, but what about new things? Does anybody know what this even is-- some kind of new plant? It's like it's everywhere I go.

[AHEM. Johto. after some heavy fumbling, a feed opens to a room in the Azalea pokécenter, stopping to focus on what looks like a three-headed, very cheerful living honeycomb. she's swaying lazily from side to side, which is probably fairly dizzying to watch considering whoever is holding the pokégear isn't exactly holding it steady.]

[to make this feed even more uncomfortable, the living honeycomb opens all three of her mouths at once and... begins buzzing. it sounds just like three bees buzzing at once, and all at different pitches. for all you pokémon out there who can understand her:]

Hi! I'm... [a pause. actually, Hunny doesn't know her name yet, because her Trainer hasn't been able to give her one. not that it matters.]

-- I'm looking for a new Trainer. Mine doesn't do anything but sleep all day and he didn't even bother to say hello or give me a name, or do anything. So I want a new one. Can I have one of your Trainers? Please? I'll even let you visit my hive when I'm the queen of it one day!

[now, Hunny is perfectly aware that prospective Trainers might not be able to understand her buzzing. luckily, she has a new Beedrill friend who belongs to her current dud of a Trainer and who will gladly do her bidding. Dapper's always been fairly dexterous with his stingers-- can't doorbell ditch without them-- and he's watched Sora doodle wherever there's free paper when he's bored, so... after figuring out where to get some ink and paper, and after some guidance from Hunny, he's managed to whip up some subtitles.]

[now, Sora had only meant to send those text messages early this morning, but Teddy, being the tech savvy little furball that he is, saw fit to grab the pokégear and snap a recording for Johto's Funniest Home Videos. Sora is seated on the ground somewhere in Ilex Forest, his head tilted waaaay back to look up at his beast of a Skarmory. a beast of a Skarmory with a squirming and squealing Caterpie wedged in her beak, and a Skarmory who is leaning down and giving Sora a fairly "YOU BETTER WISE UP AND LISTEN TO ME, YOUNG MAN," sort of look.]

[Metal Chocobo caws around the bug. Sora shakes his head fervently.]
No.

[a muffled squawk that could probably rival her mother's. "but Trainer, it's breakfast time! and I caught you this delicious Caterpie! here comes the choochoo bird--"]

No! Look, I know I said I ate a few bugs as a kid, but I haven't in years! C'mon...

["SON, YOU ARE LUCKY I'M NOT EATING THIS THEN REGURGITATING IT ON YOU." Metal Chocobo looms closer, practically smashing the poor Caterpie against Sora's face-- and, like a stubborn and picky toddler, he clamps his mouth shut and tries to wedge his hands between his mouth and the bug.]

[unfortunately for Sora, Metal Chocobo has quite the height advantage. Sunday morning has turned into a battle of wits, kid against bird-- or at least, a battle of who's more stubborn.]
keychained: (spite)
[as much as Sora loves bugs, and as he would have liked to leave Goldenrod to beat up certain bugs for a certain gym badge, this kid appearing on the network this afternoon is in Serious Battle Mode- a mode he hasn't been in ever since he got here and finally had a chance to relax.]

It's just one thing after another... Hey! How is everybody holding up? No serious injuries, right? If you're somewhere around Goldenrod and you need help, lemme know. I'll come get you.

[a pause.] Is anybody else out there trying to fight these things? They need to be kept as far away from the pokecenters as possible so people can still get in.

[Sora shakes his head. he may or may not have been on the receiving end of a Yanma attack earlier, and quite frankly he found it worse than taking a wing to the face from a Wyvern. not something he wants to experience again, nor does he want anybody else experiencing it. luckily he's armed and ready for the next battle he's about to run headfirst into: a carved Keyblade! a single pokeball! ... a pair of earplugs! Sora that is not a good weapon at all.]

I'm gonna try one more idea. Stay safe you guys!

[suddenly, Johto network: a boy and his giraffe! Sora is standing right outside the entrance to the Goldenrod Gym, Puddles snuffling at his face as he gives his four-legged friend a final once over. bowtie? check! freshly washed and shiny coat? double-check! looks like Puddles has got himself another hot date with a certain gym leader's Girafarig- it also looks like the trusty old Teddy-cam is doing what he does best: recording conversations he shouldn't be.]

[Puddles bleats and nudges Sora again, as if questioningly.] What?

[kid and giraffe both tilt their heads as they stare at each other.] ... It's okay, really. Riku's already got the Plain Badge, so we can get to Violet and back just fine. I don't need to get it myself. [Sora flails a little as Puddles practically sticks his snout in his eye. BUT TRAINER, DON'T YOU WANT TO BE A MASTER? I MEAN, I'D STILL BE FURIOUS IF YOU EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT HURTING MY HONEY BUNCHES OF OATS, AND I WOULD BLEAT ANGRILY AT YOU FOR HOURS AFTER THE BATTLE, BUT--]

Hey- Knock it off, Puddles! That's someone really special in there, isn't it? I know she's supposed to battle for Whitney, and lots of other people have already battled her... but you still hate it when she gets hurt. Right?

[Puddles bobs his head. yes, Trainer is right, it tears Puddles up inside when she so much as stubs a hoof- you should see him fret when someone inflicts a status on her. Sora... lifts a hand and rubs at his own messy hair awkwardly.]

Look, I... I know how you feel, okay? That's why I can't battle Whitney- and I'm not going to. So... don't worry about it. Go on and have a good time.

[Sora has to swipe his arm out of the way when Puddles turns to avoid being bitten by his tail- but he doesn't really pay it much mind. he doesn't seem to notice the wide-eyed Teddiursa with the pokégear, either. he simply turns in the direction of the Radio Tower looming in the distance, presumably the same place he'd been eyeing warily for days.]

[closed captioning and consideration for this video feed is brought to you by a certain camera-Teddy-- though really, Teddy is more providing commentary than he is relaying the conversation, chirping in whenever he sees fit. a studio audience, if you will. Sora is right outside the pokécenter in Goldenrod, crouched down on one knee so that he's face-to-face with a Poliwag. a Poliwag who's standing up straight and proudly bearing a fedora atop his head. ... and a paper beard across his face.]

[it gets better.]

Y'know, you're getting really good at solving mysteries, Douglas! But this one's gonna stump you for weeks, promise. You'll be so stumped you won't even know what hit you. [a squeak from Teddy, which sounds an awful lot like an "ooooh." "OH NO TRAINER DIDN'T."]

I call it "The Case of the Missing Bow Tie." Or, the case Puddles would be really mad at me if he knew about... Because someone's stolen his bow tie! ["OH THE HORROR, NOT THE BOW TIE! Hey Trainer, I'm totally going to tell Puddles on you."]

Luckily, though, I've managed to scrape together a clue that may help us find the perpetrator. I need for you to find me a treasure chest that doesn't have any kind of lid or keyhole on it. Think you can do that?

[Teddiursa makes a noise that sort of implies that he thinks Trainer is crazy-- what would you do with a treasure chest that you can't open?-- but Douglas stands on his tippy toes and squeaks in determination! he can do this, Trainer! he has a namesake to live up to!]

[that said, if one's wandering about Goldenrod, he or she may bump into Sora as he follows his sleuthing Poliwag around town, along with a teddy bear gleefully taping the whole thing.]

[gosh, Johto, hope you weren't trying to sleep or anything: there's suddenly a series of sharp clunks and clatters, and the microphone screeches loudly and shrilly like it's short-circuiting. pokégear's clearly on its last legs, what with how many times Sora's been dropping the dang thing.]

[a silent pause, save for some unsteady breathing, before there's another loud squeal from the 'gear, like that ear-splitting screech from a microphone, as Sora clambers out of bed and picks it up, turns it over in his hands... notices it's on.]

Sorry. [it's not much of an apology to the network, considering it's mumbled and somewhat faded into static, but he doesn't really offer much else. it's the first time he's accidentally sent the pokégear flying in his sleep, but the second time he's woken up tonight, and some fresh air really sounds good as opposed to to just lying in bed staring at the ceiling. he'd done plenty of that the past week, too.]

[he's downstairs in the lobby of the Goldenrod hotel a few minutes later, 'gear in hand and all bundled up but looking reluctant to actually go outside, if there are any night owls or roommates hanging around-- he didn't exactly get up and leave the room quietly.]

[if one is brave enough to venture outside in the cold and snow and ice and onto Route 34 today, he or she may notice a feral child just outside the entrance to Goldenrod-- Johto's very own Mowgli is sitting cross-legged off to the side, hunched over with his arms wrapped tightly around himself. surprisingly enough, snow is pretty chilly when one lacks a winter coat.]

[it's not out of not owning one, however; Sora's coat is actually laid out on the ground in front of him. no... wait, it's haphazardly draped across about the top third of a Dratini, who is curled up with his head resting on Trainer's lap. the coat isn't much, but it's all Sora's got.]

C'mon... We're maybe ten minutes away from the Center. You can do it! We've made it this far together, right?

[a pitiful whine from the Dratini. Sora's momentarily defeated expression is obscured by his hair, and by the fact that he's staring down at the ground. though it's probably equally pitiful, that defeat hardens into steel determination-- he and Pokémon hadn't trudged around out in who-knows-where for two weeks, and finally back onto the route to wind up freezing to death now.]

All right. [his voice is unsteady, but warm.] I think you've pulled more than your own weight lately... I'll keep going for the both of us. Okay? Hold still; I'll carry you.

[... how Sora intends to pick up and carry what is essentially a 6-foot giant worm is questionable, but dangit, he's going to try-- once he picks himself up and actually gets going, anyway. good thing Dratinis are on the light side for their length.]

[clunk. white noise distorts this transmission for several seconds-- the feed cuts in, cuts out... almost blips out entirely for a split second there before the pokégear practically roars back to life and the feed returns to its normal clarity. someone really ought to tell Sora to stop dropping his 'gear.]

[it appears to be any normal evening on the ground here in Goldenrod: warm-colored, freshly lit buildings to replace the setting sun somewhere in the distance, two Girafarigs galloping down the street and away from the feed... someone in the middle of an intense fight.]

[the 'gear is fixed on some spot down the road, so the combatants are mostly heard-- well, Sora, anyway; he's doing a lot of yelling-- and only seen in occasional red and yellow and black blurs. after a few minutes of heavy footsteps and the wooshes of someone swinging something heavy pass, Sora skids to a stop in the 'gear's view, trying to catch his breath, gripping a wooden Keyblade Ven carved for him months ago tightly in his hands. he is sweaty, his hair is disheveled and there's a streak of soot across his face-- he probably smells, too. for a kid caught up in what looks like a pretty violent brawl, he actually seems pretty calm. in fact, the 'gear is close enough to catch a sly grin on his face.]

When are you gonna stop going easy on me, huh Dapper? C'mon, I dare you to sting me!

[oh, it is on now, Trainer-- the Beedrill buzzes from offscreen, and Sora's expression briefly flickers to one of surprise. well, he did ask for it. the pokégear finally craps out right as Sora's moving to dodge a well-aimed Twinneedle.]

[hey there, Johto! it's New Year's Eve, and as such the network is receiving a video feed from Father Time himself-- who knows where the hobbling little bearded old man came from, but he's currently curled up warm and toasty leaning up against the inn at Goldenrod, with his hat and his windbreaker and his scarf and his Girafarig blanket and-- wait. it's just Sora.]

[it appears he's wearing as many Christmas presents as he could pile on today (yes, the beard was a Christmas present. it's long and gray and glorious and one of these days he'll notice the stuffed pidgey in there, too). and when he starts speaking, it sounds like Father Time is having a really difficult... time... keeping a straight face.]

... My egg exploded into a dinosaur! See? [the feed turns to reveal a very tiny Tropius-- even though she's just a baby, it's pretty obvious that she's on the small side... probably around knee height to Trainer. the Tropius squeaks in greeting and flaps a leaf like she's trying to wave.]

The pokédex said that these guys start to grow their favorite fruit around their necks because it's the only thing they eat. Sooo, I was wondering... Has anybody seen a star-shaped fruit around? I already checked the stores here, but no luck.

Teddy the Teddiursa toddles along after him, recording with the pokégear in his stubby paws.]

[first things first-- Sora lurched his way over to the closest vending machine and picked up two bottles of soda. he... made an honest effort to chug them, but wound up dumping the contents of the second bottle into a nearby sewer. it wasn't the soda he was interested in, anyway. next, he walked over to the radio tower-- he couldn't really see the ocean over the fence nearby, but he could hear it... seems no matter where you go, the ocean always sounds the same. he sat down, leaning against both the radio tower and a newly hatched Dratini for support, and began writing.]

Thanks. I-- [and Sora turns, noticing Bell pointing his gear at him and recording. he still hasn't actually been out and about Goldenrod wearing something other than his pajamas, but he at least thought to put on some shoes and a jacket this time. he steps a little closer, looking down at the 'gear and Bell-- he's smiling genuinely, but there's definitely a tinge of sadness somewhere in there.]
