[now, Dapper here hasn't been with his Trainer for very long, but in the short time they have spent together, he's seemed to pick up on Sora's general moods and mannerisms (not that it's difficult to do so): there's the default pretty cheerful Sora, the determined-to-battle-and-win Sora, the frustrated Sora, and most likely Dapper's personal favorite, the Dapper-why-did-you-just-sting-me Sora.]

[but mopey Sora is definitely a new one- new enough for Dapper to see fit to record the occasion like a nature documentary! the feed flicks on to a shot of Route 31, just outside of Violet City. our rare specimen is sitting nearby with his back to the camera, knees drawn up to his chest to serve as a spot to hide his face. Puddles is sitting next to him, nudging at him with a bag of trail mix between its teeth, because food is always a good pick-me-up apparently.]

... It's fine, Puddles. Really.

But... I don't know who I'd write to. I don't think they let birds in the jail...

[Sora doesn't answer at first, because he's wondering if Pearl means to say that her mother's in jail- who else could she be talking about?- but he has no tactful way of asking that question. he fumbles a little awkwardly, and settles into a more comfortable position on the ground, legs crossed. maybe he shouldn't ask at all- it's not his business, even if he is curious.]

Mmm... I bet you could train a bird to leave your letter at the entrance or something, and then the guards could take care of it from there.

But she did a bad thing, so I probably shouldn't... [She'll explain eventually, Sora. Just be patient and supply Fanny with eternal pettings.]

Did she mean to do it, Pearl? Even if she did... if she means a lot to you she'll need your light to find her way back.

[and while Sora provides pettings for Fanny, Puddles is starting to think that he wants some affection, too, and bends down to nuzzle at Pearl's face. LOVE HIM, PEARLY.]

[Pearly puts off answering by glancing at Puddles head for a second, then wrapping her arms around it in a hug. Sorry giraffe-thing, you're gonna have to deal with small spaces for a little bit.

When she's ready to answer, she'll let go of Puddles and suffice for stroking the sides of his face instead.]

Mother is very smart... She meant to do everything she did. And I don't think I can help her, not anymore... If they let her come home, she'll just try to hurt Mystic Maya again.

[he wasn't able to stop that question from slipping out, and frowns.]

Without Mystic Maya, I... [She lets her forehead rest against Puddles' nose now, still rubbing his face to keep him happy.] I'd be the next Master of the Kurain Channeling School. [A pause.] But I don't want to be. I love Mystic Maya, and she's much better at it than I am, anyway.

Well... What is it you do want, Pearl? That's more important than being Master of anything.

I want things to be just how they are. Except I want Mr. Nick to remember me here, and I want Mr. Doe to go home.

Then you just worry about making sure you hang on to your own light, okay?

[he holds his pinky out to her- hey, he may be 14, but pinky promises are still completely viable agreements.]

Don't forget about your mom, though. It sounds like she's just lost sight of what's really important.

[She looks at the pinky, perplexed.] What am I supposed to do with that?

Hook your pinky with mine! It's a special kind of promise, that you'll make sure you're happy above all else.

[After a second, she reaches out and does so.] I promise, then.
