[When the video feed first clicks on, there isn't much in the way of visuals except blackness, interspersed with the occasional flash of dull light. The sounds are much more fascinating than the sights, as it were: something is snuffling at the pokégear, and after a moment there's a series of sharp thunks, as if someone were rapping against the microphone. Something is trying to eat it.]

-- Hey! Knock it off! Look, there's food in the bag if you're hungry..

[The feed swings around wildly as Sora snatches away and tries to wipe the pokégear off on his jumpsuit, then stops abruptly as he turns it over in his hand and stares straight into the camera, his expression bewildered. This thing looks more high-tech than the lifts in Hollow Bastion.]

Okay, I'm.. not really sure what I was expecting, but the everlasting Darkness is weird.

A world called Johto. It's a pretty friendly place, so I doubt it's got anything to do with darkness.

Johto? You wouldn't happen to know which way to start flying to get back to Hollow Bastion, would you?

[Sora would have to somehow be flying without a Gummi Ship, but details, details. he'll figure something out.]

...Hollow Bastion?

[The flying part doesn't seem so weird, since he remembers keyblades weren't news to Sora before]

I don't think we can leave this place by choice.

It's a world overrun by the Heartless. I was supposed to seal the Keyhole, but that.. kind of didn't work out.

[to that last tidbit of information, he droops.]

Heartless, huh? [Somehow that sounds...weird. Maybe Riku was onto something before] Were there really all that many?

[And then upon seeing Sora's reaction...]

Hey, it'll be okay! From what I hear, when we do go home, we're right back at the same moment we'd left.

... Yeah. Some guy named Ansem was trying to open the doorway to the Keyhole. The Heartless were already running the place as it was.

[unfortunately, that's not particularly reassuring either. will he fade back to the Darkness if he ever goes back? Sora taps his chin, thoughtful with a splash of worry.]

Man, I didn't think there were that many of them out there...

Yeah..

[he blinks, then perks up suddenly, realizing something.]

Hey, wait- you know what the Heartless are?

[Ven's a bit puzzled, but the expression fades quickly enough]

Well yeah, I've run into a few. Sounds like you've seen loads more.

Unfortunately. They swallowed my home.

Wh- really? [stunned for a spell] I...I'm sorry to hear that.

... It's okay. When I do get home, the first thing I'm gonna do is seal the Keyhole in Hollow Bastion. Then I'll find a way to restore the islands.

-- Hey, uh.. Since you know about Heartless and everything.. have we met before?

That's... [a really good question]

I think we might come from the same, uh...set of worlds, I guess you could say. But you were also here before, and we met then.

... I'm sorry that I don't remember. And that I got shorter.

[pfft, Sora, you crack him up]

Hey, it's okay! Can't blame you for either of those things.

So let's start over.

[have a big, cheerful grin]

My name's Ventus, but you can call me Ven if you like. Nice to meet you, Sora!

[he grins right back, and, well, he can't really help himself when he waves to the camera. it's instinct.]

[Ven's happy to wave right back]

Actually, I've been here a while, so I've got four now! Wanna see?

Yeah, okay! I'll show you Puddles, too.

[although Sora doesn't actively need to do anything to show Ven, the Girafarig is already looming over Sora's shoulder and staring intently at the pokégear.]

You named it Puddles, huh? I've never seen a pokémon like that before!

[cure some scenery blurring by before Ven's pack of poké-pals comes into view. they seem to be sleeping in something of a cluster. well, at least Skiploom and Vaporeon are. Gastly's hovering around, and Drifloon's tethered itself to Vaporeon's tail.

Ven's hand comes into view, naming off each one as he points]

That's Gastly up there, and Drifloon, and Skiploom. And Vaporeon's the partner I started off with, she was an Eevee before.

[kid and pokémon have a synchronized expression of amazement.]

Whoa.. You caught all those yourself? Can we battle sometime?

Kind of. Drifloon here just started following me around one day.

And sure, we can battle if you want! I'm over in Violet though, so it might be a while.

That's okay! That gives me and Puddles time to train. Right, Puddles?

[... the Girafarig blinks, then yawwwwns. yup, he's definitely battle-ready.]

Yep, that's true! And I bet you'll find more teammates along the way.
