That's the thing-- I don't know. There were other Shadows in the world we fought in that didn't take on human form. Kind of like... the lesser ones that just attacked you for no reason. But Teddie was different.

He... sacrificed himself to protect the others from... um, me. And it turned out he had a Shadow. That was my first fight.
